A Darker Alice Halloween Costume Idea
With the new Alice in Wonderland film by Tim Burton coming out next year, people have brought out a new love for the classic characters. It is no surprise that children, and adults, will be dressing up as these characters for Halloween this year.
Sir John Tenniel was the first to create illustrations based on the classic Lewis Carrol novel. He placed Alice in the dress and pinafore that we all know and recognize today. The dress always seems to be blue, although rarely it has been seen in yellow, or peach. She wears white stockings and Mary Jane’s on her feet.
This guide on making an Alice costume is meant to form the wearer stand out among the many other Alice’s that are determined to be walking around reach Halloween. This costume idea revolves around the darker side of Alice in Wonderland. Tim Burton’s movie, although it is from Disney, appears to have a darker theme. Also, this costume gets some ideas from the computer game American McGee’s Alice, which is very creepy. What is most significant, though, is that the creator uses their own imagination to compose this costume different. There is nothing wrong with making changes to a classic costume, as long as you quiet appear as Alice to all who look at you.
1) Open with the dress. Go to a local thrift store and see what you can find there. The dress should have short sleeves and the skirt no longer than to the knees. If you want to go as a sexier Alice, the skirt can be as short as you feel comfortable in. It does NOT have to be blue. Because this costume is meant to be darker, and less childlike, the color should reflect that. A dark red would work wonderfully, but black would make you look too much like a maid.
If you have sewing skills, that’s even better than the thrift store. There are always cheap dress patterns available in stores and online that would work for the Alice dress. You could wait until Halloween, when the costume patterns come out, and buy the Alice pattern, or you could look for any dress that fits the design. This plot it is slightly different. New Look patterns from Simplicity is a great place to find a dress.
2) Next, you need an apron. It should have an upper bib, and cross over in the back. Two large pockets in the front are a good idea as well. Any white apron would work. However, to make it more interesting and different, you could sew your own apron and expend a lace material. That diagram the material from the dress shows through. If the material has a design as well, the design will pop out more with the color underneath and discover amazing.
Save a strip of the lace material to tie in your hair.
3) White tights are the classic contrivance to go, and always work. For a darker Alice, wear fishnets or black tights. For a sexier Alice, wear white knee high stockings with the petite ribbons on the top.
4) Mary Jane’s work perfect on your feet. Even for the darker Alice. If you want to go sexy, or more Goth, wear stiletto heels, or knee high boots.
5) Generally, Alice is a blonde, and her hair is pretty long. If you want to follow that tradition, then go for it. It will unexcited behold great with this costume. Wigs are readily available around Halloween time if you aren’t already a blonde.
If you’re brave, dye your hair. You can recall wash out colors, and semi permanent colors nearly anywhere. Black would be the perfect color for this costume. What would be amazing would be if you colored your hair to match your dress. If you went with classic blue, catch blue comb in color from places like Hot Topic or Spencers. If you chose a red dress, go red. Have fun with it. The color will wash out and it will make the costume all the more improbable.
6) An accessory idea would be to carry a stuffed white rabbit. Put a coat on him to make him stand out as the White Rabbit. Better yet, gain your friends to play the other parts. There are unlimited ideas for characters such as the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Red and White Queen. Go crazy, and be creative. Be different! It is for Halloween.
